A BIT OF HISTORY

The Contrada of San Luca (Saint Luke Village) belongs to the Palio of Ferrara, known like the most important ancient racing of the world.
In 1279 in fact it became an institution thanks to the Common of Ferrara, sanctioning in this way a popular tradition born approximately 20 years before in order to celebrate the Marquise and Gentleman of the city of Azzo VII Novello Este, winner in 1259 in Cassano of Adda against Ezzelino da Romano, substitute of the German Emperor.
This racing silk was normally disputed the 14th of April, in occasion of the Saint Mother Mary memory day. Many and meaningful testimonies of the past have reached to us from the very several writers of the age; from the poet Ludovico Ariosto in the 1st piece of the Orlando Furioso, and from the painter Francesco del Cossa that, in the Schifanoia Palace’s rooms in Ferrara, made a fresco with a wonderful imagine of it, visible still today.
